XtC09052000 Next: XtC23052000 Agenda: I thought we might do some development. There are some projects coming out of Camp Smalltalk http://www.camp.smalltalk.org that we might look at. Or we could play around with pocketsmalltalk: http://www.pocketsmalltalk.com http://www.thinktankinc.com/pocketSt/index.htm I would like to do a smalltalk project because I think we would get a bit more immediate gratification than we do in java. ---TomAyerst Tom and I had a conversation when leaving XtC09052000, about implementing a SimpleGoStory. Feel free to enhance the story - perhaps we should spend 15 mins collecting stories with our user hats on? I don't think we should necessarily choose the language, we should come to the XtC16052000 with spike solutions in mind, and decide on the best course of action -- PaulSimmons In case you haven't seen it, take a peek at Wiki.BistroLanguage? (or http://www.jps.net/nikboyd/bistro/), a Smalltalk/Java hybrid (not just/even compiling St to JVM bytecodes; more of a Smalltalk-shaped language for the JDK, with its own little class library that now includes a variant of SUnit as well). I think it looks nice, proper Smalltalkers might start feeling ill, I don't know. Might be an easier transition for non-Smalltalky Java people like me to cope with. --RichardEmerson I thought it looked neat - but when I read 20x slower and no integrated environment it put me off - maybe for functional testing? As its mostly Smalltalk syntax - I don't think that the bytecodes underneath really help - however I can promise that Smalltalk is really easy (shhhh - its a secret though!). I have added other interesting things that cropped up at XtC09052000. TimM After a re-read I'm not sure if Bistro is all 20x slower or just the stuff that requires java reflection. If you could bear to declare type info it woud speed up a lot. --ta Other interesting topics from XtC09052000 Shall we go with Go ? If we decide it up front we'll all have the right head on when we get there. PaulS won't be able to make XtC today. KeithBraithwaite should be there. TomAyerst should be there (It is TheOldBankOfEngland isn't it?) yes - and IvanMoore will be there with an improvised Go board. SvenHowarth will be there with the real thing. ³³agent³Mozilla/4.5 en?
