Activities:

  • Avi Bryant, the author of SeaSide, will be speaking

Topics for Discussion:

  • Seaside has been used successfully at WDS to build prototype/proof-of-concept web apps for internal tools. The rapidity and ease of doing so impressed a lot of people, but...on seeing the code to write out a page of HTML one developer complained that it "wasn't a template" (in the style of Velocity), and so couldn't easily be put in front of a non-programming web developer for l10n, branding etc. Do other Seasiders have this issue, and if so, how has it been overcome? (And if not, why not?) -- KeithB
    • We talked about CSS being the answer. See http://www.csszengarden.com/ for proof this is possible. Are the tools, skills and browsers mature enough for CSS is an open question (not posed), CSS is the W3C answer to this problem, so it seems like a good answer from that angle, i.e. tools skills and browsers eventually follow standards.--OliBye
    • At Connextra we worked with a web designer and it proved difficult for this person to really grasp any of the things you did in a template language (we used velocity) other than simple variables. So developers ended up writing the templates in yet another language. So if I end up being the end user anyway - why not just write it in expressive code? And use the CSS solution indicated above? As for I10n - that just a simple externalisation of resource strings - its already solved. -- TimM

  • There is a video of this Avi's presentation distributed around the UK on various laptops. I'll get my bit back to TimM who can put in on some server with more bandwidth than XPD.
    • In progress - the files are big even in mpg4 but the quality is not bad for a little digital camera... a lower quality wmv file of the presentation is 200mb but the screen is a bit blurry. the wma (audio) is 13mb. -- TimM
