NotDoingXpByTheBook

I'm not sure if anyone is DoingXpByTheBook (see BooKs).

Please list on this page any XP practices that your team has 'dropped. --RachelDavies

If you added a practice please add it to AdditionalXpPractices.

  • When DoingXpByTheBook individual developers pick stories and estimate them as individuals, this practice was dropped at ConneXtra in favour of estimating all stories as a team. This has the disadvantage of longer estimating sessions by we find we are able to swap pairs more effectively over the iteration so improves Collective Ownership. --RachelDavies

  • The WhiteBook? does state that individuals own tasks and estimate them. The PinkBook? is a little more open. At Penrillian every developer who can be spared from developing joins in estimating stories and tasks. It does take longer, but the discussion over cards with wide variance in individuals estimates are always fruitful. And after these couple of years practice, our estimation is getting scarily accurate.--KeithBraithwaite

  • The team at ConneXtra has collective ownership our process, as the team has been running for 2+ years we find we don't really need individuals in role of tracker or coach (related to this we have added end of iteration retrospectives). --RachelDavies

  • SystemMetaphor? Does anybody outside the original C3 team really know what this means in practice? Is there really a consensus that it's been scrapped or is it a "secret sauce" whose recipie is kept as a trade secret? Explanations of the form "you just had to be there to understand" and "it can't be easily written down" just don't cut it with me. It won't be understood until somebody who knows really tries to explain it to others.--DafyddRees

  • An alternative name for SystemMetaphor? is SystemOfNames, which at least gives some indication of what the thing is for. At Penrillian, we've always had whatever I imagine would be in the SM mandated by the customer. They already have a condensed understanding of their domain from which a vocabulary has arisen. Maybe SM was an artifact of C3 being a toss-it-and-start-again project? --KeithBraithwaite

  • I don't know if we've dropped OnSiteCustomer? from our intentions, but we have pretty much given up any hope of it ever happening. We do try to get as many face-to-face meetings between client staff and ourselves as possible in the lifetime of a project. --KeithBraithwaite
