NonDayToDayActivities

I'ts been a while for me but the main difficulties i had in my last XP-ish project where:

• the initial phase of the project (i.e. do a business case, define the global architecture, make a global plan, etc.)
• translate the progress to a part of the organisation that only cared about global progress
• integrate non-code centric issues like writing manuals

At the time i used the Unified Process phases (inception, elaboration, construction, deployment) to keep parts of the organisation happy and help me determine what to do when. In my opion XP if pretty silent(immature?) on these topics - but i probably missed a lot during all kinds of XP conferences i did not attend. Has XP evolved/matured in this direction? How do you guys address this what i call here NonDayToDayActivities?
