Lord of The Flies - a book by William Golding that tells the story of a bunch of posh school-boys who slowly descend into savagery after being marooned on a desert island after a plane crash. One of their ill-fated attempts to re-impose order involved passing a conch (type of seashell) to whoever was speaking at a meeting so that they wouldn't be interrupted; the conch gave its holder the sole right to speak and all others had to listen.
