At the Xtc20050111 gathering, I brought up a few topics that deserve references:
- Introduction to Receiver Operator Characteristics (ROC) curves from the perspective of medicine: http://gim.unmc.edu/dxtests/ROC1.htm
. This company uses ROC curves for automatic taxonomy classificiation, given an expert body of text: http://www.intellisophic.com/ . (Used to be called IndraWeb?.)
- Use of an evolutionary algorithm to develop a satellite boom (arm) to withstand vibrations (citation number 8): http://www.soton.ac.uk/~mmt2/publications.htm
. Moshrefi-Torbati, A. J. Keane, S. J. Elliott, M. J. Brennan and E. Rogers, "Passive vibration control of a satellite boom structure by geometric optimisation using genetic algorithm", J. of Sound and Vibration, 267 (2003), pp. 879-892. Apparently the problem is sufficiently chaotic and/or multivariate to warrant a novel process.
- The TUNES project is an open source effort for a provable, secure operating system. The most obvious result is currently the Slate functional programming language. http://tunes.org/
