I have been developing software for about 8 years (5 in an OO environment using Smalltalk). Most of that time has been spent at Royal & Sunalliance (formerly Royal Insurance), with a short spell at Vertex Data Sciences between October 2000 and June 2001. I am now back at Royal & Sunalliance getting involved in software delivery.

I was first aware of XP late in 1998, but only got the opportunity to use it at the end of 1999 when we introduced it on a project delivering insurance quotation functionality onto the web where I was both project manager and a designer/developer.

The software in that project was delivered on time and under budget and we believe that success was largely due to the XP method.

I was co-leader of a session at OT2001 with Stephen Hutchinson entitled "Extreme Programming in the Real World", which covered some of the issues associated with introducing XP into an established, fairly traditional IT department. The output from that session is at www.ot2001.org/scripts/wiki/?ExtremeProgrammingInTheRealWorldWriteup
