In a nutshell it was this:
Most (all?) of the sessions at OT2001 that dealt with XP focused on one or two of the twelve techniques or assumed prior knowledge of them all (we were guilty of this in our own "XP in the Real World), yet it had been a couple of years since KentBeck was at the conference talking about XP in its entirety.
If your first exposure to XP is just one or two of the techniques, you simply won't get it! As a result, the sessions were only ever preaching to the converted (and turning a lot of potential converts off forever!)
We've put in a proposal to run an "Introduction to XP" session early in the conference so that anyone who is new to the approach can get a starter for ten on all of the techniques before attending the other sessions that focus on a smaller number.
